Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule (even under a magnifying glass).

Cat Number: K 40085.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. A more typical weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Original plum copies are quite scarce and elusive, in this type condition especially. As prices increase for top quality originals, many vinyl fans are looking for superb, slightly later pressings, and I have no qualms in offering this hardly played example. This was not a big seller, only after the issue of their third, ‘The Yes Album’ did they get more recognised with sales rising accordingly. It did chart briefly peaking at No. 45 in the UK, but failed to break into the US charts at all. Also the US version had very different artwork. This is a fabulous and still early pre-Warner copy that offers fantastic clean sound with the same cover artwork and format, also with the same lyric insert sheet. Copies this clean are not easily found either.

Musicians: Bill Bruford - drums, vibes; Tony Kaye - keyboards; Peter Banks - guitar, vocals; Chris Squire - bass, vocals; John Anderson - lead singer, percussion.

Brief Info: Brilliant second album from one of rock’s evergreen progressive bands that contined where the debut left off. It was clear even from these early days, this band were hugely talented and technically ahead of the field. From these early beginnings, things progressed fast and soon they became one of the biggest and most successful within their genre. It was the last to feature Peter Banks soon to be replaced by Steve Howe. This a fantastic early repressing that offers nigh-on pristine sound, when found this clean, I have no hesitation in offering them.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still, this is a very unforgiving cover, but has little to fault unless scrutinised closely under light. An unlaminated single format with a matt, smooth finish. Rarely seen devoid of major rubbing, grubbiness and ring wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill (as the per the original) and including the original lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: Slightly daring artwork that was changed in the US. Viewed normally, this has little to fault with just faint traces of set-off on the white area near the top. Under light some very faint dulling is seen, possibly from a protective sleeve over many years (that purely speculation), but practically invisible viewed full-on and very faint anyway. Generally clean and crease-free with mininmal rim impression or rubbing. A difficult front that looks really nice.

Cover Back: Again a little set-off but little else really.

Top Edge: Clean, straight and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Practically the same, any rub traces tiny and very few.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring tiny and faint near the very top as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light. The ends are deeply pinched in manufacture and both these fragile areas are crisp and very neat indeed (hopefully as seen on my close-up pictures). Barely any wear and devoid of grubbiness. All text perfect and unworn.

Corners: Any tip rubs very small and light with very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: Never easy to find attractive examples of this cover. This is very nice indeed with any blemishes only light. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner that has aged very well. Clean and still fresh with minimal discolouration, barely any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: MINT(-): this lyric insert is close to perfect with no creasing or toning and includes the correct new K 40085 number. Printed one side only and still very clean and white with very sharp edges and no creasing and barely any marks. This guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very clean and hardly played record with any surface blemishes few and very light as seen critically under bright angled light. This super album plays to nigh-on perfection and this is no easy task for this complex music. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. If prices for top originals is now a factor, this superb early second issue that has no loss of detail or clarity, could fit the bill perfectly. Put this on to your turntable, and it sounds exactly the same and without the potential damage inflicted by vintage record players.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any hints of surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted, this is an exceptional clean pressing, just the way the discerning listener wants them to sound. Impressive separation, clarity and focus, this copy does the music and band full justice. Few copies will match or outperform it and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. YES – this lovely complete example will prove immensely difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
