After a couple of psychedelia tinged pop/rock outings, Yes threw their hat into the fledgling progressive rock ring with this album. The first of three pretty good attempts before they unfortunately succumbed to all the stereotypes bandied about by prog's detractors. They exhibited virtuosity without that becoming the focus, the songwriting was strong and while the songs were obviously more complex and longer than radio stations preferred, the tunes were catchy enough that those of us who are old enough grew up hearing them on our favorite FM stations anyway. It's a lyrically silly album, to be sure, but few albums aren't.
