The late Tokyo producer Susumu Yokota's Grinning Cat returns on Lo Recordings' Skintone Edition. First released in 2001 on his own Skintone label, the album found Yokota pivoting from the serene atmospheres of Sakura toward a more playful blend of jazz harmony, ambient drift and collagic sampling, creating miniature, looping universes. Like short, locked-groove phials of sound, we hear piano, bird calls and human responses. All run a complex stitch of forms, where musted jazz and softly arranged orchestras collide, wedging thick between the cogs of time.
