Well, listening to this album is a bit like going back to memory lane. I had the cassette, which was a present from a long gone friend in the late 80s and unfortunately, I lost it while travelling.
Y&T have always been one of my favourite melodic rock bands with great screaming guitars and excellent vocals. I first got the album Mean Streak with the singer Dave Meniketti and Joey Alves on the guitars, Philip Kennemore on the bass and Leonard Haze marching on the drums. I loved them a lot. That album was like a mean killing machine with ear-catching melodies that you would hum or whistle later. I bought the live album Open Fire and I listened to it again and again.
Now instead of Leonard Haze, who might have left to join Ian Gillan's new band, we have a very young Jimmy DeGrasso, who later joined forces with Alice Cooper and Black Star Riders, and who's also a brilliant drummer.
As for the music itself, it's still the kind of melodic American hard rock in the category of KISS and Van Halen, but please, don't misunderstand me, they're not copycats to follow other hard rockers in their footsteps, they have their own musical world and exciting sound.
My favourites are Armed And Dangerous and Fight For Your Life, which could easily be on Mean Streak as well, but I like all of the songs here. I think if you're into this musical genre, but you haven't heard Y&T, you can start getting to know them by listening to this album, and I'm sure you'll get all of their albums. Enjoy!
