  Following on from two US No.1 smash albums in a row - "Honky Chateau" and "Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player", Elton John hit a career peak with the massively popular "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". The double album’s full of classics like "Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", the magnificent "Benny And The Jets" and the brilliant ode to Marilyn Monroe, "Candle In The Wind".

"When John compared himself to the Beatles, it wasn't just a delusion of grandeur. "Revolver lifted them onto a higher plane, and Honky Chateau did the same for us," he said in 1973. "Then they did the White Album, and now we'll have a double, too." Everything about Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is supersonically huge, from the Wagnerian-opera-like combo of "Funeral for a Friend" and "Love Lies Bleeding" to the electric boots and mohair suit of "Bennie and the Jets." On the title track, John and his songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, harnessed the fantastical imagery of glam to a Gershwin-sweet melody." - Rolling Stone

"Inspired by the Rolling Stones' Goats Head Soup, John and lyricist Taupin went to Kingston, Jamaica, to record John's sixth album. 'The studio was surrounded by barbed wire,' said Taupin, 'and there were guys with machine guns.' Too scared to leave their hotel, the duo wrote 21 songs in three days, including 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.'" - Rolling Stone
