Album Notes:

Z is the fourth studio album by rock band My Morning Jacket. This collection features a much spacier and more polished sound than previous releases, making heavy use of synthesizers throughout and incorporating reggae and dub influences. The heavy reverb that was a defining characteristic of the band’s prior recordings is largely absent. The songs on the album are more focused and shorter in length compared to the band’s previous albums.

 

My Morning Jacket is an American rock band from Louisville, Kentucky. The band consists of Jim James (singer-songwriter, guitarist - also known as Yim Yames), Tom ‘Two-Tone Tommy’ Blankenship (bassist), Patrick Hallahan (drummer), Carl Broemel (guitarist, pedal steel guitarist, saxophonist, vocalist), and Bo Koster (keyboardist, percussionist, vocalist).

 

The album was the second highest rated album of 2005 according to Metacritic, behind Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois; the album has a total score of 90 out of 100. Online music magazine Pitchfork Media placed Z at number 146 on their list of top 200 albums of the 2000s. One review claimed it as the “OK Computer” of My Morning Jacket.
