Label Conditions: All very clean, fresh and attractive with just a couple of light spindle marks on side three and little else. This from the super clean collection I purchased a few weeks ago, most barely played.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 115 / 110 grams. Quite typical weights for this album.

Rarity: Moderate in terms of Zappa albums, this proved a steady seller and is one is most cherished albums amongst fans. Finding barely played copies within a little-worn cover is far harder.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Zappa’s first live album and first double on his new formed Discreet label and what an absolute delight it is too. With a new formed Mothers band, one of the greatest he ever put together, this is a stunning live set with very complex music and of course some great dialogue in the unique Zappa style. Recorded in December 1973 at The Roxy, Hollywood, who but Zappa could issue a live double set with most of the material being new? The players here tackled some of Frank’s most complex instrumental works with supreme skill and tightness. New stars within the Mothers band were Napoleon Murphy Brock whose vocal humour was addictive and Ruth Underwood whose skill and timing on percussion was sublime. The full band line-up that actually included two drummers were: Zappa - lead guitar and vocals; George Duke - keyboards, synthesiser and vocals; Tom Fowler - bass; Ruth Underwood - percussion; Jeff Simmons - rhythm guitar, vocals; Don Preston - synthesiser; Bruce Fowler - trombone; Walt Fowler - trumpet; Napoleon Murphy Brock - tenor sax, flute and vocals; Ralph Humphrey - drums and Chester Thompson - drums. This was one of Zappa’s best ever backing bands and became very popular with fans. The preamble’s that starts each side are typically amusing where Zappa informs the audience about extra-terrestrial gratification, small-town nostalgia, 50s monster movies and the dubious state of jazz. As stated, highly complex musically with brilliant virtuoso interplay between guitar and brass with some stunning soloing by Zappa and electrified wind instruments. On side four, Zappa invites the audience members up on stage to dance to George Duke’s scat jazz vocals and includes his immortal line ‘Jazz is not dead, it just smells funny’. The intention of including so much new material on a live set was an attempt to distract bootleggers, Zappa was the second most bootlegged artist after Dylan at the time. This is a great UK pressed copy also, both records look and plays beautifully. The unlaminated black gatefold is hardly ever seen devoid of heavy ringwear – this has only relatively light traces. A great set and one of the very best live Zappa albums ever, if not THE best. Few artists performed live better than Frank and every album he issued was an thrill, unpredictable and brilliant – this man was always ahead of the game and his fans loved him all the more for it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Gothic Print.

Cover Front: All the ingredients for ringwear and rubbing, few ever avoid it. The front has a mild rim arc at the top and bottom with any other blemishes few, light and minor. This being one of the least rubbed examples I have seen for ages. The lack of creasing always good news too.

Cover Back: Very faint rub traces and the lack of ringwear on this side is very unusual – any traces tiny and very faint indeed. Fresh, clean and very impressive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically nothing to fault inside here, lyrics to the songs are included but not the preamble material.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are tiny, few and faint.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp barely any wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on these edges.

Spine and Text: Other than a small central dink that I feel sure the original owner has very lightly tipped-in, there is little else to fault on a spine that seldom wears well. Very solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, all edges near flush and parallel. All text for a change is pristine perfect and unworn.

Corners: All neat and sharp, minimal traces of any wear but possible tiny tip enhancements from the one and only original owner. If so, they barely even register (but I always feel obliged to mention if I suspect it to be the case).

Cover Summary: A very strong and attractive all-round example of this delicate wear-prone cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This splendid item should please many, if not most collectors. A totally wear-free example of this cover is near impossible to find, my own copy the closest I have probably ever seen. This came to me with two lined inner sleeves which have darkened with age. Probably not the originals but a mirror-image patented pair with little else to fault bar the moderate browning.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual pair. Super clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. Barely a mark to be seen and typical vinyl from this collection. A copy played once or twice and finding this album cleaner will prove very difficult, these should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super pair play up to their high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is exceptional for a live set with a wide dynamic range and very detailed audio quality with incredible stereo imagery. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted, few copies will play better than this. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and looked after within a non-smoking environment. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful Zappa live set. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommeded.

Final Summary: Far less vulgar than the two Reprise live albums he made previously with the Flo and Eddie Mothers of Invention. This line-up were technically far superior to that band and the music did much of the talking. Erring more towards jazz-rock this classic line-up performed Zappa’s ‘difficult’ pieces superbly and this set has few overdubs. The King of the Bizarre, with the greatest moustache in rock history, was now making more intricate instrumental music more than bawdy humour. For me anyway, one of the greatest era’s in his great career. Most discerning rock lovers will enjoy this classic set, just one of around 60 essential albums he made. Truly fabulous and WILL THE DVD EVER BE FINISHED & RELEASED?!

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
