Back in 1983, Texan three piece ZZ Top's eighth album became the most successful album of their career, by a country mile. It's one of those albums that just about everyone has crossed paths with, whether through MTV back in the day or simply hearing 'Sharp Dressed Man' blasting from a bar jukebox. Now Rhino's Rocktober 2025 reissue gives everyone a chance to revisit the album with a beautifully designed gatefold that now includes an interview with Billy Gibbons. What makes Eliminator so interesting is how it straddles two worlds. On one side, you've got ZZ Top's Texas blues roots with the gritty guitar licks, sly lyrics and that attitude only Gibbons can deliver. On the other, you've got the band leaning headfirst into the 80s with synths, sequencers and drum machines. At the time, it rubbed some fans the wrong way, but there's no denying it gave the band their biggest hits. 'Gimme All Your Lovin'', 'Sharp Dressed Man' and 'Legs' still sound catchy today. The deep cuts hold up too. 'I Need You Tonight' smoulders like a lost blues torch song, while 'TV Dinners' shows off the band's quirky humour. And 'Bad Girl' closes things out with an almost live feel that hints back to their scrappier days. Overall, one of the pinnacle albums of the decade.
