FIFTH ALBUM from these Texan legends. Its an amazing work, primarilly as it gives the impression of being created totally off the cuff, but scratch below the surface and you'll find a world of microscopic nuiances that could only come from the hands of master craftsman. Nothing here is by accident, every lick, squeal and drum roll is pre planned and pre sequenced, built for comfort not for speed. Clearly Gibbons is masterminding this enormous triumph from behind his singing-ringing Gibson Les Paul but that is not meant to disrespect the valued services of Hill or Beard. The drums are deliberately light and free-form, lacking customary brutal omph but retaining a sense of purpose and command in circumstances that would challenge even the most adroit sticks men. Dusty rolls across the desert plain with a thick, clumpy sound that sounds like he's hitting a massive cardboard box with a finely crafted hockey stick. Together they sound like worker ants constructing a new world.

Visions of the dry, dusty desert are many. 'Arrested For Driving While Blind' and 'El Diablo' not only evoke a sun scorched vista, big fat Cactus trees and dust storms but also tell stories that sound highly believable (aint that the truth). Even the odd, twisted and slightly surreal 'Snappy Kakkie' takes on a massively enriched status amidst such complexities. Simpler, on the face of it, toons like 'It's Only Love', 'She's A Heartbreaker' (to a degree), ' Ten Dollar Man' and 'Enjoy And Get It On' offer instant access to the thoughts and actions of chairman Gibbons as he steers his guitar playing through dangerous chicanes where riffs and solos collide in spectacular fashion. 

My pesonal favourite track? Uncharacteristically the simple twelve bar shuffle of 'Pan Am Blues' and possibly 'Avalon Hideaway' both allowing Dusty and Frank to trade vocal lines of equal importance whilst Beard amazes innocent bystanders with complex fills and kit rolls that would make a mans moustache melt. Best guitar work? Every track reveals Gibbon's ability to amaze with his twisty, bendy out-there take on the blues and I'd go with anything just to immerse myself in his brilliance.

Unquestionably one of the greatest rock albums of all time..

This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.

Pressing: London, UK, 1976

Vinyl: Superb clean and shiny condition. I can see a couple of spindle marks but virtually no other signs of use. Grades as a super MINT-!

Cover: Again, virtually no signs of use. Issued in a beautifully illustrated gatefold cover. Sharp corners, no dings, no bends, no ring wear, no split seams and no creases. Spine is square, straight, stiff and totally uncrushed. Displays a small scuff to bottom of front panel - hard to see. Beautiful and impossible to find like this 40 years after release. Grades as almost shop fresh MINT-!
