Description
AFRICAN DANCE BAND OF THE COLD STORAGE COMMISSION OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA Leader - August Msarurgwa Skokiaan/Karekwangu South African Gallotone GB.1152 E- Recorded in 1950 in Bulawayo by Hugh Tracey, Gallo finally got around to releasing 'Skokiaan' a year or so later when (much to everyone's surprise - note that it was the b side of the record!), it became a huge African hit all over the sub-continent. In 1954, Gallo convinced UK Decca to release it on their London label in both the US and UK markets as credited to the 'Bulawayo Sweet Rhythms Band' where it also sold pretty well while inspiring several best selling covers by Ted Heath and Louis Armstrong, among others. From a purely technical standpoint, it is an incredibly ropey recording (Tracey's engineer must have been drunk at the time) but nonetheless it's a wonderful performance and a great tune.
BIDDERS PLEASE READ! These records must be shipped from South Africa so eBay's standard $4.00 postal rate applicable to internal North American shipments does not apply. (The eBay template requires that a shipping fee of no more than $4.00 be entered so I have complied, but common sense should tell you that it costs more to ship a record 10,000 miles from the southern end of the African continent to, say, Chicago than it will from Des Moines.) SO, DO NOT SEND MONEY UNTIL YOU RECEIVE AN INVOICE REFLECTING THE ACTUAL COST OF POSTAGE ! I can ship to any location from Albania to Zimbabwe.
