c.1928-30's Inside Start 33 RPM 12" Record Comedy & Jazz Show Radio Broadcast Transcription
- Label: Start Inside, Needle Pressure 4oz, "Musical Crackers" Bill Hawley and Bob Donohoo, Episode No.1 (No.2 on reverse side), 33-1/3 RPM, Lateral Cut, Copyright US and Foreign, American Transcriptions, Incorporated, 149 Powell Street, San Francisco, Cal. This Transcription is leased for one Broadcast only and must be returned. Use New Needle, Medium Tone Only.
- This record consists of a kind of radio vaudeville comedy and music variety show by Hawley & Donohoo. The style of music is 1920's and 30's to my ears. We were asked if the music was Jazzy in style, and a lot of it is. One routine is all about the stocks falling and depression, so that makes this record from 1929 or perhaps somewhat later.
- This record is played on a manual turntable in clockwise direction, but it plays "backwards", in that it is started on the inside and plays to the outside (inside start) instead of the normal outside-in direction.
- According to my research, I believe this record is made of shellac, rather than lacquer, but notice the needle directions given on the label and see the pictures to judge for yourself.
- This record is from the early Golden Age of Radio before record companies allowed their records to be played over the air, and radio stations used transcription subscription services to provide content in the form of these records. This one was to be played once and then returned, so the station would have made it into an event with advertising to tune in to hear the next episode of the program at a certain time, not to be heard again.
- I could find no information online regarding American Transcriptions or Bill Hawley and Bob Donohoo. The address given on the label was used by someone else as recently as World War Two, so that service likely was only active during those early years from 1928 into the early 1930's before the major labels established disc jockeys sometime around World War Two.
- I played both sides, and each side played without a skip despite a chip at the end of the program on side one as shown, and it had tolerable surface noise in my opinion.
