RC collectable Mod five singles consist of Sam Cooke’s,Shake, a song frequently covered live by UK bands in the 60s & on the Bside, Cooke’s ‘A change is gonna come’, which probably resonates more today thanin 1965, Soul Sauce (1965) by Cal Tjader, ex Dave Brubeck percussionist coupledwith Mongo Santamaria’s version of Herbie Hancock’s. Watermelon Man on USA label, Original Jazz classics. Skatalites dancefavourite Guns of Navarone released & bought at W H Smith’s, Ilford in 1965didn’t chart till April 1967. A little bit hurt, Julien Covey’s only single, althoughhe had many other releases under different aliases, was a huge mod favourite. Themuch coveted Beat Merchant’s 1964 debut single Pretty Face & a Muddy Water’s‘Messing with the man’ cover on the B side completes the five ‘collectables’ sale.

mod non-UK release five singles consists of Lee Dorsey’s Fury Records 1962 released, Do-Re-Mi which was part of GeorgieFame’s Flamingo set & released by him on a live LP. I’ve got something good,Sam & Kitty’s 1966 rare US release on 4 Brothers became much sought after onthe 70s Northern soul scene. Two popular mod dance tunes, Stop her on sight& Headline Newssung & co-written by Edwin Star underhis birth name, Charles Hatcher are on Tic-Toc (USA).  Starr lived in the UK from the late 60s tillhis death in 2003. The five singles are completed by Bunny Sigler’s massive moddance number, Let the good times roll which I bought in Valencia in the 60s.

Atlantic mod singles consists of the Rufus Thomas’1964 recording of Somebody stolemy dog & the 1963 release of If you need me by Solomon Burke, which inspiredthe Rolling Stones & the Blues Brothers 1980s film. Sock it to ‘em JB (1966)by Rex Garvin & the Mighty Cravers was guaranteed to fill the dance floor. TheThree Caps 1966 release of Cool Jerk, became a Northern Soul favourite in the1970s. The set is completed with a USA re-issue of two of Joe Tex’s mostpopular tunes Hold on to what you’ve got (1964) & Show Me (1967).

Mod began about 1958 in London’sSoho & Notting Hill, dominantly males & focussed on fashion, music& scooters. Smart Italian tailor made suits were worn, Lambretta& Vespa scooters driven & modern jazz, soul, rhythm & blues & ska listened to. By 1963English groups emerged playing covers of US mod records at Soho mod clubs suchas the Flamingo & Scene. By the mid 60s Mod had become a UK wide movement, lostits cult status & thus it's influence waned. The music partlyevolved intofreakbeat (a term not used at the time) & psychedelia, but not in  the  north where clubs such as the Twisted Wheel continuedplaying mod music which by the 1970s had become Northern Soul & outlastedits mod roots.
