Mythra
With hard rock back in the public eye, numerous young outfits are emerging on the scene; one that's caught my attention recently is Mythra, a five-piece group from the Newcastle area. They've yet to been seen outside their local region, but already they've begun to make a name for themselves with a highly impressive debut EP that's been climbing several alternative charts in recent weeks.
No doubt, Mythra will soon be heading down south, and the sooner the better if the EP is to be taken as a yardstick. Recorded last December, it gave the band their first experience of working in a studio.
Released on the Guardian label, it sold over 15,000 copies before Pinnacle Records signed the band to their Street Beat label. Mythra are probably most reminiscent of Judas Priest; but it's difficult not to draw similarities between the younger bands and the more successfully established outfits, as Vince High, their lead singer, pointed out.
"We really take it as a compliment if people want to compare us with Priest and bands like them," he said, "but I don't think that we sound directly like any other band. There are obvious influences though but they just reflect the group's taste in music."
One thing about Mythra that's certainly unique is their name. I asked Vince how it evolved. "It was the guitarist's idea actually," he replied, "but to be perfectly honest I don't really know what it means!"
Mythra's current position is reminiscent of the early days of Def Leppard, and like the Leppards Mythra are very young - drummer Barry Hopper and bassist Pete Melsom are 17 and 16 respectively. I only hope that they're carefully guided.
In the meantime, non-converted metal fanatics would definitely benefit from a visit to the local record store to buy a copy of the EP - the track "Death And Destiny" is a classic.

NM = Near Mint - or unplayed condition. Cover is nice and new looking with no ring wear.
NM- = Only slight signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks which will not distract significantly from the sound. Cover also has only slight wear, and is still in nice collectible condition.
VG+ = Played often with moderate surface wear and some moderate noise - still plays well. Cover may have medium overall wear or some ring wear.
VG = Overall wear, but no skips of serious defects, more noisy sound during quiet passages. Cover is well worn, usually with considerable ring wear.
VG- = Heavy wear on record and cover.
