released early - 1970s (maybe 1971?) in
Japan by Warner-Pioneer # P-10131S

featuring legendary Andy Warhol designed
cover artwork with the rare original working zipper
on the front cover that reveals a male crotch shot
underwear photo underneath when zipper is unzipped
and the belt at the top of the front cover is pulled back
and the zipper has YKK maker's mark on it. This Lp
cover is considered to be of the best album artwork
ever produced & despite popular myth that the cover
model was Mick Jagger, it is said to actually be
actor Joe Dallesandro who would later appear
on the cover of The Smiths debut album

and this copy also has the custom printed
inner-sleeve featuring the 1st appearance of the
now-famous Stones "Lips & Tongue" logo as well as
credits and a band photo & also contains the almost
never seen lyric sheet for this album, and the inner
insert & cover are all original custom printed

this Japanese Pressing is sought after for its
superior sound quality & for the very rare bonus
lyric sheet insert & also has the Warhol zipper cover
as well as the inner-sleeve with credits & the
Stones "tongue" logo and band photo

~ condition ~


record is in Excellent Condition and has been
fully play tested and it sounds great and plays with
only light occasional crackle during the quieter spots
and has no skips, repeats or bad noise & the vinyl
is shiny & clean with only extremely light visible wear
(the record also has a very, very slight edge warp that
causes no issues to the sound on our player) & the
whole record sounds great with the biggest and
fullest warm tone we've ever hear for this Lp

cover is in Excellent Condition* with bold bright
printing & has no seam splits, writing or markings
and has just light wear to the corners & the usual zipper
indentations on the back (from where the zipper of the
copy behind it in shipment pressed up slightly against it)
& the zipper is still fully functional and & the belt part
of the cover is in as nice shape as we've seen it ~ but
there's a flaw* in that a previous owner taped the zipper
down to keep it from damaging other records & the tape
was removed & removed some of the printing but this
was neatly corrected with black ink making it
blend in nicely at this point

the lyric sheet insert is in nice shape but
does have very light wrinkling to it & the inner-sleeve
is in fantastic shape with no seam splits but does
have very light wrinkling but nothing bad

~ review ~


pieced together from outtakes & much labored
over songs, Sticky Fingers manages to have a loose
ramshackle ambience belying both its origins and
the dark undercurrents of the songs making for a weary
drug-laden album (over half of the songs explicitly
mention drug use, while the others merely allude to it)
and apart from the opener "Brown Sugar" (a gleeful tune
about slavery,  interracial sex & lost virginity) & "Can't
You Hear Me Knocking" & the mean- spirited song "Bitch"
Sticky Fingers is a slow bluesy affair with a few country
touches thrown in for good measure & this laid-back tone
gives ample room for new guitarist Mick Taylor to stretch
out (particularly on the extended coda of "Can't You Hear
Me Knocking) but the key here isn't the instrumental
interplay (which is terrific) ~ it's the utter weariness of the
songs that make this record great. "Wild Horses" is their
first nonironic stab at country & is a beautiful heart-tugging
masterpiece & "I Got the Blues" is a similarly ravished late-
night classic ranking among their best blues & the great
"Sister Morphine" is a horrifying overdose tale & the sad
yearning, drug-addled & beautiful song & "Moonlight Mile"
is a perfect closure with grandiose strings. With its offhand
mixture of decadence, roots music & outright malevolence
this album set the tone for the rest of the decade

the story behind the cover of this legendary lp
is that in 1969 at a NYC party Andy Warhol casually
mentioned to Mick Jagger that it would be amusing
to have a real working zipper on an album cover
and one year later Jagger proposed the idea for
Sticky Fingers which'd be the first release on
the new Rolling Stones record label

album package designer Craig Braun worked
with Warhol & the Stones to create this iconic artwork
which's become as important as Warhol's masterpiece
the Velvet Underground & Nico cover & the artwork
for Sticky Fingers helped usher in a new sexual side of
the Stones with the cover shot taken by Andy Warhol
and initially the cover design was highly controverial with
some department stores refusing to carry it because of
the erotic nature of the crotch image & the cover was
also very expensive & problematic to manufacture &
this is what makes this a real find because this version
of the cover was quickly replaced in later pressings
and this is the real thing from and is a true part
of Rolling Stones and Rock & Roll history

also American country rock pioneer Gram Parsons
had a huge influence on the stones during this period
and the song "Wild Horses" is said to have
been inspired by Gram Parsons
