Description

Here we have an original 1961 Alan Lomax LP Record Album, Southern Journey 5, Deep South... Sacred and Sinful, a collection of field recordings from the South, Prestige International, plus a Lyrics Book. A magnificent addition to your American Folk Music collection. The legendary Alan Lomax (1915-2002), a great field collector of folk music, was the first to record folk mega-stars like Leadbelly, Muddy Waters and Woody Guthrie. This LP album is the fifth in the Southern Journey series, and contains the following tracks:

Sweet Roseanne

Mama's Gonna Buy

East Coast Line

Buttermilk

Tom Devil

Riley

You Done Tol' Everybody

You Got Dimples in your Jaws

It Just Suits Me

My Mother Died and Left Me

Moses, Don't Get Lost

No Room at the Inn/The Last Month of the Year

I Wisht I Was in Heaven

Very Same Lord

The Prayer Wheel

Among the Puritans of New England, drunkeness was a lightly regarded sin, whereas breaking the Sabbath was a very serious matter. On the white frontier, sexual foibles was at the top of the forbidden list, while in the Black American communities, drunkeness, gambling and avarice are considered sure tickets to hell, while erotic deviance was thought to be smiled upon by the Lord. A similar and shifting line has long divided the music of the devil from those who walked in the Lord's holy ways, and this record documents both sides. Lomax traveled into virtually isolated areas to record the fifth album right there on site.

Lomax died at the age of 87, as a pioneer of musicology. Even though the FBI investigated him for 37 years, they never succeeded in finding any evidence of any Communist associations. Lomax left us with a legacy that preserved traditional music and took it to a wider audience, for which we are all eternally grateful.

The album and lyrics book are in Excellent condition and the jacket is in Good condition.
