   "MAN OF WORDS, MAN OF MUSIC" was the first record on which David Bowie looked and sounded like the Bowie whom the world has come to know. One glance at the spooky, androgynous face that adorns the gatefold cover is enough to signal that the light-pop singer of a few years earlier was a thing of the past. Leaving behind his initial 60's pop recordings, Bowie roughened up his sound, creating an eclectic mix of folk and rock tinged with electronic effects. The record yielded his first American hit in "Space Oddity", and began the singer's soon-to-be meteoric rise to international rock icon-hood.

   SPACE ODDITY, a sci-fi mini-epic, is an enduring classic in which Bowie squeezes every bit of drama from both a dour low range and the soaring upper reaches of his magnificent voice. Even after decades of continued airplay, "Space Oddity" is surprising for its intricate arrangement, nifty guitar playing, and palpable sense of interplanetary estrangement. Other fine and lesser-known musical moments include the sublimely subdued "Letter to Hermione," and the sprawling and strange "Memory of a Free Festival."

   The album has everything from pure pop-sike ballad to psychedelic rock and progressive folk ...solid entirety and beautiful one. There are various 12 string guitar based songs on the album and Letter To Hermione, one of his most beautiful, falls squarely into the singer-songwriter genre. Janine does too but there are other songs simply too idiosyncratic to appeal to the same group of listeners.
   Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud and An Occaisional Dream are both impressive arrangements, yet melodramatic and not introspective for easy listening, middle-of-the-road tastes of the time.
   Unwashed And Somewhat Slightly Dazed turns into an enjoyable loose jam and with Bowie's obscure lyrics and rather disarranged presentation ~~ just might be one of Bowie's first tributes to the Velvet Underground.
   Something sinister lurks within the impenetrable Cygnet Committee which has some delightful twists and turns with a great creative crescendo climax. Such darkness sits uneasily alongside his flower-power sentiments in Memory Of A Free Festival, on which Bowie conjures up his version of Hey Jude and, as with that Beatles classic, the song at the beginning is rather diluted by the very extended coda.
   That said, Bowie's song writing is strong throughout this album, just as you'd expect from Bowie, irrespective of any style he adopts. God Knows I'm Good might has an irresistible charm.
   Space Oddity, a pun on the famous film title, was a big hit of course, and deservedly so with spacious atmospherics and soaring melody.

10. The cover: rated: VG++ overall strong, figure no need to upgrade the unique highly creative gatefold cover has very-minor past use evident. Any serious collection seeking enthusiast would most likely swoop up. Despite light front cover VG++ as well the beautiful artistic back cover is also clean M-
    ...   Overall a very sought solid keeper... there are no delete marks, no split seams, and no writing, still with fresh colors ... most difficult to find in ANY condition, especially final collection-worthy, like this !!
