Description
First- this auction is for 1 (one) MONO copy and 1(one) Stereo copy of the vinyl pressings of the Tri-Color versions, both of them are first pressings.
THERE ARE NO JACKETS, NOR INSERTS OR SLEEVES
PHOTOS: close up shots of the vinyl surface were taken with a fully charged halogen flashlight.
The MONO plays above its appearance as there are a fair amount of abrasionson the surface. It was play tested with an old school GRADO MONO at 1.63 grams. It plays loud and clear, with relatively low noise throughout. This is not to say there is no noise, but that that is there is ..pretty minimal (again per the grade of a 53 year old, Rare, Mono Hendrix LP). I would consider this pressing to be in the highly listenable category (and this is having heard a near perfect, first pressing Stereo Tri-Color out of the same CBS Terre Haute plant this morning).
It has 2 skips 3/4 thru side 1, track one, they appear to be from a cueing effort (actually, the lack thereof). On a 1-10 scale as to its "effect" is a 3 or 4. This was the only place my set up had any issue with tracking. This is a rare press- but with 2 slight issues, that said, I would listen to it again (see below), because the balance of the recording is a VG++.
There are plenty of options at this point in the world to listen to this recording---but this is the one Jimi himself signed off on, and spent considerable time and effort on this mix. This is one off the very first copies that came off the presses in the summer of 67'. The first were the Mono white labels that the dj's preferred (durability for one, as they flung them here and there), then the MONO Tri-Color labels for the public would have been run, this is an example of one, and one of the very first created of one of the greatest rock albums in rock history- maybe forever.
I'm a fan, so I have to tell those who have not had the first hand "experience" with the original MONO, that the original is much clearer and louder, plus there is a clarity and raspyness that the MONO mix imparts to Jimi's Strat that I think is not to be heard in the Stereo (which I am listening to now). And then there are "little" tiny things that are different- "damn man" at the end of side A is barely perceptible (to me) in the Stereo, but in the Mono, it is "right there". If your a fan, ya gotta have the MONO LP.
The Stereo Tri-Color copy that is included in this auction plays with a less clarity, and certainly more noise, but no skips. There was a 6-7 seconds of what sounded like an abrasion (??) All told of the Stereo copy- some noise, sometimes prominent, no skips, played hard and long, but because CBS was so good at pressing records in the mid 60's -- this one is not too bad. I'd listen to it again.
**This afternoon just hours before the listing started, I have again reviewed the entire MONO copy with a pair of AKG headphones. With the phones, the noise is of course more perceptible and consistent, but never did it become a distraction to the music, or even get close. Even the 2 little skips, were no big deal even with the headphones.
