LITTLE WONDER RECORDS
and BUBBLE BOOKS
An Illustrated History and Discography
By Tim Brooks with Merle Sprinzen
Little Wonder records look like children's toys, but they aren't. Selling by the millions from 1914 to 1923, for just a dime each, many featured leading artists performing the pop tunes of the day. In 1917 they were joined by another diminutive disc line that was for children — the Harper Bubble Books, packaged in richly illustrated albums.
Tim Brooks and Merle Sprinzen reveal the often-turbulent story behind these labels in a richly illustrated and carefully documented history.
The discography identifies the anonymous performers (which, in addition to the usual studio free-lancers of the day included Al Jolson, Wilbur Sweatman's Jazz Band, the California Ramblers, and other stars) and holds many new surprises, including picture discs, a little-known group of operatic recordings issued only in Italy, and a even a speech by presidential candidate Warren G. Harding.
