A COLLECTION OF 78 RPM JAZZ RECORDS BY LOUIS ARMSTRONG, KING OLIVER, BUNK JOHNSON ETC.
Having divested myself of most of my collection of 78s in the jazz genre, I am now finally giving up my original first love --- those featuring Louis Armstrong.
A number of these were sent to me from the USA during the 1950s and 60s by my brother Dr. Al Vollmer, jazz collector and researcher, as well as co-founder in 1973 of the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band. He formed the latter with ex King Oliver trombonist Clyde Bernhardt, and he is still their manager. The HBJB inaugurated the Louis Armstrong House in New York when it opened a few years ago as it was the only band to have ex Armstrong members still playing.
There are 18 No. 10 inch and 4 No. 12 inch Louis Armstrong led recordings and 8 No. 10 inch King Oliver recordings, several of which list Louis as being in the band. Others I am less sure about the personnel.
I am also throwing in 4 more 10inch recordings featuring Punch Millar, Bunk Johnson, Allen- Higginbotham with the Luis Russell orchestra and Mahalia Jackson.
The Armstrong recordings are on labels Brunswick, Parlophone, HMV, Odeon, Jazz Classics and Hot Jazz Club of America. The Oliver ones are on Creole, Century, XX, Paradox and the HJC of America.
The former contain titles such as:- West End Blues, St Louis Blues , Papa De-Da-Da, Tight Like This, Alligator Blues, Key Hole Blues, Rockin’ Chair, St. James Infirmary, Save It Pretty Mama and many more.
The latter :- Sobbin’ Blues, Sweet Lovin’ Man, Mabel’s dream, Sweet Baby Doll, Sitting on top of the World, Speakeasy Blues, Krooked Blues, Alligator Hop, etc etc .
The Mahalia Jackson recording on the Apollo label is I believe an original recording and features her singing ‘Go Tell It On The Mountain’ and ‘ Silent Night, Holy Night’
Most of the records have quite a lot of wear to them but still are a joy to listen to.
