Record and Sleeve Grading

MINT (M)

These are absolutely perfect in every way. Normally still sealed.

NEAR MINT (NM)

NM records are shiny, with no visible defects. Writing, stickers or other markings cannot appear on the labels or sleeve. May have just 1 or 2 spindle marks. If played, it will do so with no surface noise. (NM records don’t have to be “never played”; a record used on an excellent turntable can remain NM after many plays if the disc is properly cared for.)

NM sleevess are free of creases, ring wear and seam splits of any kind.

EXCELLENT (EX)

A good description of an EX record is “except for a couple minor things, this would be Near Mint.”

EX records may show some slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect the listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. Minor signs of handling are OK, too, such as telltale spindle marks around the centre hole.

An EX cover might have some very, very minor ring wear or seam wear.

Very Good (VG)

VG records have more obvious flaws than their counterparts in better shape. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory-fresh records. Might have very light surface marks. When played, a VG record might have surface noise, and some marks may be audible, especially in soft passages and during the intro and ending. But the noise will not overpower the music.

VG covers will have signs of human handling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the cover where the edge of a record would reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some more creases might be visible and slight seam splitting. Someone might have written on it or stamped a price tag on it, too.

Good (G)

The record still plays through without skipping, so it can serve as filler until something better comes along. But it has significant surface noise and groove wear, and the sleeve may be worn, with significant ring wear, heavy writing, or obvious damage caused by someone trying to remove tape or stickers. A Good to VG– cover has ring wear to the point of distraction, has seam splits obvious on sight and may have even heavier writing.

+ or – will be used between grades for a more precise description.

International Airmail parcels are heavy duty cruciform boxes which are very sturdy but do add to the weight of the parcel.

Within the UK this will be sent in a record mailer with 2 stiffeners at 4.00GBP.

If you want it sent within the UK in an oversize record mailer to protect the sleeve and corners it will be 6.50GBP.
