ATTILIO MINEO – Conducts Man In Space With Sounds. Subliminal Sounds Records SUB-081-LP. Swedish release. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD. Recorded in 1951, but first issued in 1962 for the Seattle World’s Fair. This edition issued in 2011 in a press run of 500 copies. There were two versions of this album produced (which were both included on the previous and now out of print CD), one included spoken word introductions before each track, the other version did not have the spoken word introductions. The Subliminal Sounds website does not state which version (or both) is included on this vinyl edition, but I would venture to say it’s the version sans spoken word (if anybody out there knows the answer let me know). DESCRIPTION:  This is the description that I put together for the CD edition issued some time back:  Born in 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, Attilio Mineo might have moved from obscure to completely unknown but for the enthusiasm of a few devoted fans like Jack Diamond and Stefan Kery, who kept trumpeting praises of Mineo's innovative early electronic space age pop work, Man in Space With Sounds. Created for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, which itself provided several space age icons--most noteably the Space Needle--Mineo's album combines his modernistic compositions with alien-sounding effects laboriously produced on pre-Moog electronic instruments. Its avant-garde edge resembles some of the earliest tape-loop experiments by people like Stockhausen, where traditional musical elements were combined with samples and sound effects. Mineo manages to blends orchestral scores with sound effects so that there is almost no distinction between them. The strings and horns are as "alien" as the alarm sounds and the Theremin wails. What really makes this music contemporary with “now”, however, is the thing that probably killed its commercial appeal in the 1960s--the narrator. At the start of each track, a narrator offers a brief comment, designed to guide the visitor through the fair. From a modern perspective, however, the narrator merely adds another weird element to the music that is already weirder than most anything you’re likely to hear. As a novelty item from the Fair that served as the soundtrack to an exhibit of a clear plastic sphere/elevator known as the Bubbleator, the album quickly disappeared and now fetches as much as $100 or more among collectors (and probably more now with this reissue). Fortunately, thanks to Jack and Stefan, Man in Space With Sounds is now restored and available in its entirety on this excellent CD reissue. Mineo studied music after high school and played piano with a number of lesser-known big bands through the late 1930s and early 1940s. He began arranging early on, and eventually led his own band, which never took off beyond the regional level. He kept it going on an intermittent basis for nearly 28 years. Mineo began to concentrate on composing and arranging in the late 1940s, and it appears he took on commercial work as a means to pay for time to work on his own compsitions. He composed five symphonies and four string quartets, and scored incidental music for plays and several early television shows. Attilio Mineo is one of those obscure artists who created music so far ahead of its time that we are still trying to catch up to it today. Highly recommended!

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.

RETURN POLICY:

NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:

All packages are shipped with confirmation/tracking, you will received an automatically generated shipping notice from Ebay e-mail with your tracking number. It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.

I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal system it is beyond my control. With First-Class Package International Service my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE:  Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery, though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.
