Description
I bought this Akai 4000D reel to reel new in 1972 and then bought new the Videosonic Dolby noise reduction unit 3 years later to further improve the sound. The two were over a £100 then (with no vat!) and I have the original receipts. The rrp then was over £350! This auction is for the Akai 4000D, Videosonic Dolby noise reduction unit, Akai instruction manual, schematic wiring diagram, various cables and original box. The Akai also has a black cover shown on the left of the picture.
The akai 4000D is a 3 head all silicon 4 track transistorised pre amplifier with 2 tape speeds.
These units give the most fantastic sound and I still truly believe there is nothing to beat reel to reel. Due to space constraints the units have been stored in their boxes (in a dry environment) for the past 23 years!! I got them out a few weeks ago and have been really enjoying some original tapes from the 70s! I have to sell them because I agreed with my wife that we would buy a new DVD recorder for christmas instead!
They are in great condition for their age but note two things.
1. The knob on the speed control dropped off and is between the floorboards, if I find it I will include it otherwise leave it on the same speed or just rwist with your fingers which is absolutely no problem.
2.I played some old tapes and I think they have made the payback heads dirty. The sound has become a little distorted over the past few days. An expert friend who has one has told me that the heads should really be cleaned, if necessary de magnetised and if really necessay realigned. I have not done this thinking that its best done by the new owner. If the new buyer discovers that its a problem worse than this I will be happy to knock the extra cost of repairing off the purchase price.
Thanks for reading this And if you are interested please e mail me with any questions. This is a genuine sail of a truly loved item that is so well made and will give years of pleasure. The combination of the two units has to be heard to be believed. I know that a very well known pop singer from the 60s 70s and 80s still has his 4000D playing tapes on a daily basis in his home!
I have many tapes which may be included depending on the final price!!
I will post next day delivery, insured by Amtrak for £15.20 to anywhere in uk.
