Rare original Verve Records promotional copy of The Velvet Underground & Nico’s debut album. The commercial copies of this album appeared in retail in March, 1967. The currently listed “Disc Jockey Records” yellow label promotional copy was pressed and shipped to radio stations at the end of 1966, three months before the official release date. The gatefold cover of this copy is the Uncensored 1st State version, which is also known as the “Torso” cover that shows the fully visible and unairbrushed image of Eric Emerson projected on the wall behind the performing band on the back cover. The cover with the legendary Andy Warhol’s concept art (with the sticker peeled) is in good vintage condition as shown in the photos and described below. This promotional copy was pressed in Bloomingfield, New Jersey and contains the East Coast yellow / black promotional version “DISC JOCKEY RECORDS NOT FOR SALE” label with the T-shaped Verve Records logo, “V-5008” Mono catalog number and the misprint indicating the timing for “I’ll Be Your Mirror” as 2:01 as opposed to the correct one 2:10. The MGM Records “Made in U.S.A.” 1.25 pressing ring labels also contain the credits reading “Prod. by Andy Warhol” on both sides.
Condition of Cover - Fair-Good: Missing peel-able sticker. There is a stamp from the famous Wallich's Music City record store and markings on the back, a small split at the opening, and minor shelf wear as shown. Vintage paper sleeve, not original.
