Description

MASSIVELY RARE Original 1966 U.S. Mono "Peeled' Butcher Cover" 'Yesterday & Today' by The Beatles!!! Complete With Mega Rare Capital Recall Letter and Original Removed 'Trunk Slick'!!! A Huge, Huge Rarity, Especially In This Kind of Condition and Complete With Recall Letter & Original Slick!!!

Here is probably the rarest Beatles record you are ever likely to see... You are bidding on what is seen by most as the Holy Grail for all Beatles vinyl collectors; the infamous 'Yesterday And Today' with a peeled Butcher's Cover'! However, what makes this record EVEN MORE special is that, firstly, the peel job is absolutely superb; a fantastic example. What's more this record comes with the recall letter sent by Ron Tepper, of Capital Records!!! Lastly you will also be winning the original past-over 'trunk slick', that was originally pasted over this sleeve!!! An amazing chance to own what is probably the rarest ever official Beatles release.

For those who don't already know the story behind this legendary 'banned' cover, I will briefly explain... The story goes like this: before the inoffensive trunk cover became the standard photo for this release in the U.S., Capitol used what was seen at the time as a slightly risky avant-garde photo by Bob Whitaker. Little did they know how controversial this move was to become. This photo was taken on March 25, 1966 in Chelsea, London, England, and depicted The Beatles in white butcher smocks surrounded by slabs of meat and decapitated baby dolls.  This is what I mean above when I refer to the infamous "Butcher" cover...

Capitol Records, were totally un-prepared for the fall-out this cover was to generate from a U.S.A. that was still fairly conservative in most parts (the Haight-Ashbury scene was still in its infancy). And on the most part, this sleeve caused outrage upon distribution to retailers. Capital got the message quick, and all copies were totally recalled just as the main distribution process was about to get underway (included in this auction is a copy of the recall letter from the manager of Capitol Records, Ron Tepper, dated June 14, 1966).  So, basically, this record did not even make it to retail!!!

However, Capital, now had on their hands hundreds of copies of Yesterday & Today back at headquarters, and, as the story goes, most covers were destroyed. However, as the cost of the destruction of thousands of covers began to sink in with Capital, a clever cost-cutting move was initiated; Capital Records decided to paste a different slick (the "trunk cover") over the 'butcher cover" instead of destroying the last remaining copies.  Thus one of the most collectable records of all time was born. I've also included the removed "trunk cover" slick with this auction.

However as word got around and Beatles fans, naturally wanted to see this controversial 'withdrawn' photo of their favourite band. The few remaining albums that were pasted over and re-distributed thus became hugely collectable.  Most were ruined forever by amateur attempts to remove the 'trunk slick', resulting in complete destruction of the sleeve. However, an underground of artists (such as Jim Hansen) soon sprung up, who were capable of professionally removing these slicks for a small price. The most savvy owners had their slicks removed professionally, but these were most definitely in the minority, and for every professionally removed slick 50+ were ruined by their owners, or at least peeled very badly indeed.

Now we come to this record, and as I said above, this is a superb example. Although not mint, it is a very good peel and you will be hard pushed to find better nowadays. The as mentioned above the original 'trunk' slick' is also included as is the recall letter (which is a very nice photo-copy of the original) See below for a full description and images, and don't miss this one!!!

Cat No:

The Cool matt textured U.S. black 'rainbow rim' centre labels are Nr Mint with NO Spindle Lines whatsoever!!! There are NO Tears, NO Scribbles. NO lifting or Bubbling and NO unwanted writing of any kind to the centre labels - they are as close to Mint as it is possible to get!!! Copies of this LP only turn up today completely worn out with lots of scratches and gouges - this one is not!!! It has a beautiful shine and that 'just pressed' look and feel. There are quite a few light hairlines which in no way effect the playing by causing any nasty skips or jumps!!! This record easily grades as Very Good+ even by our own strict grading standards (most would grade much higher). Now we get to the all important peeled "Butcher" and as mentioned above, it is a SUPERB example of this mega rare sleeve!!! It has retained all of its stiffness and box shape; it has not gone lifeless and floppy like most that come up for sale today!!! The sleeve lies totally FLAT with NONE of the ring wear commonly associated with this sleeve. Remarkably - all the original spine text is clearly visible and readable (although there is a small paper crack in the cat number nr the bottom), Intact spine text is very rare for this peeled sleeve, as most or all of the spine text is usually lost in the peel process!!! The peel job is superb, It does have 3 or 4 very small parches of white and a very small patch of white in the top right corner. I have tries to show all of these in the photos. There has been some yellowing over time and a very small amount of very light staining, but that's pretty much it - a wonderful example of the rarest Beatles sleeve!!! However I WILL NOT fall into the trap of over-grading to compensate for age and the sleeve must PROPERLY grade visually Very Good+!!!! Believe me this record is NOT over-graded in ANY way!!! The letter as mentioned above is photocopied on quality paper from the original and is in super shape, as new! The original slick has been removed fantastically!!! It has retained 100% its full square shape with no loss to any of the corners!!! It is lovely and FLAT and just has the one single split about a third of the way down. That's about it really - don't hesitate to email with any questions etc. A beautiful example of the ultimate Beatles rarity!!! An essential record for any Beatles/Classic Pop fan to to own!!! Don't miss this one as these "Butcher" LP's NEVER turn up any more, let alone in this kind of condition. And as usual it will go to the highest bidder! Like all my auctions, it has no reserve and a very low start, so once its gone its gone. Please check out my feedback and bid with confidence as this is a NO RESERVE auction with a very low starting price!

This will very rarely, if ever, happen. We will not be impressed with buyers disputing our gradings without even bothering to check the UK record collector grading standards chart first - you have been warned ...

Buyers who continually Haggle, Whine and Moan to try to decrease the price they won their auctions for will be blocked from bidding on future auctions and can toodle off down to HMV or Virgin where they can harass the counter staff there.

We will always leave feedback upon receipt of feedback. In an ideal world we would like to leave feedback as soon as the record has been shipped but due to feedback blackmail in the past (i,e, ",,,I want a partial refund or I will leave negative feedback") we have opted to take this measure.
