Just weeks before he would pass away in 1958, Big Bill Broonzy sat in at a recording session for Columbia records and recorded this great contribution for the blues posterity. By this time, Big Bill's stature as the founding father of modern urban blues had been so firmly established that Columbia (almost certainly at the insistence of John Hammond, Sr.) felt obligated to give Big Bill a "star" treatment and record his swan song on their audiophile "Adventures in Sound" gold label subsidiary. As a result, of many Big Bill Broonzy's albums, this one sounds by far the best and is the single most listenable one. The album has been unavailable for decades in any way, manner or form. In addition to being one of the finest - and rarest - blues albums ever, it sports one of the most desolate, bluesy cover artworks of all time - evocative of the wee small hours of desperation and being left alone with the bottle of schnapps . I guess you can call it `no-money-no-wimmin-no-booze-blues`. This is one of those albums where COVER sings to you as much as the artist does. A Must for any self-respecting blues collector.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS WEAK NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(e)           Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a rectangular, sticker residue (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker or piece of tape) (about 2 square inches total area on each side)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
