 Difficult to find a more influential album in the heavy metal genre than Black Sabbath's debut album. Graced with a gloomy old mill filtered photo with a so-called witch, the Brummie quartet went straight for the dark side of rock and their sinister looks sporting large crosses were certainly enhancing intently this image. Recorded and produced by Rodger Bain in just two days, this might seem today a real botch job in the light of modern technology, but it is precisely this rough, raw finish that gave this album its aura..

The vinyl still has a pleasing lustre which is amazing considering this record is over 40 years old. This FIRST pressing has been well played and has the odd crackle and pop on the quieter passages but being pressed on heavyweight vinyl it still packs a punch. There are some light surface scratches but they do not cause the LP to skip or jump and I would rate it as VERY GOOD. The sought after SWIRL labels have no writing or annotations.

The deluxe gatefold sleeve has obviously seen a few parties in its time and there is a small rip on the front cover together with some storage wear around the edges. Inside there is some wear but nothing too detrimental - please see pix.

So not a mint edition, but nevertheless a RARITY and a decent addition to any collection.

Grading Guide:

"MINT: The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
