Label Conditions: Both incredibly clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule with no wear around the hole. This beautiful vintage record appears hardly played.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Early stereo copies in this condition are scarce. Few people purchased stereo records in the early to mid 1960s, this was the ‘mono’ era. This particular copy is rare and unusual. The record was pressed in England but using the American stampers – this is confirmed by the machine punched matrix details seen below. I have personally never seen such a pressing, most-all UK stampers include either the distinctive Philips, or CBS matrixes to match the UK catalogue number. So a very unusual early example and one that plays superbly. This also for an acoustic album with no places for imperfections to hide. This a collector piece for Dylan fans and one to treasure.

Original Year of Release: 1964 [the copy from 1965]

Musician: Bob Dylan – vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica.

Brief Info: Dylan’s third album and still very much a full acoustic folk set. It was his first to feature all self-written songs, the title track being one of his best known ever and sold well. This ‘hybrid’ UK pressing using the American stampers was a joy to play-grade with little unwanted and appears hardly even played. A rare find indeed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with the front laminated. This covers all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England, uncredited. This includes its original 095 (September 1965) polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Age-defying and impressive, most will know the state these vintage Dylan covers are found in. As seen, this has the correct large arrowed STEREO logo on the front (and back). The laminate retains fine shine, freshness and clarity – these uncredited sleeves never quite as shiny as the major manufacturers like E.J. Day and Garrod & Lofthouse. No lifting or peeling, any creasing little, fine and light. Dylan’s portrait looks superb as seen in close-up.

Cover Back: Again impressive and offering scant clues of age with any discolouration or creasing of the white surface minimal indeed. A fairly flimsy cover, few will better this now. All three flipbacks are solidly intact and neat with clean ends with little burring. A little surface creasing only on the bottom left end, an impressive back to match the quality front.

Top Edge: Very thin, but fully intact and laminated, not perfectly straight as few like this will be.

Bottom Edge: Similar to above, this one straighter still.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Mostly sharp with any thickening negligible. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compression light. The text is virtually unworn (one tiny surface chip only) under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Only quite small rubs to the bottom pair and retaining very fine to excellent shape with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this quite fragile mid-1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): with only relatively mild discolouration of the white paper and seam edge adhesive. This vintage plain inner is date-coded 095 (September 1965). Also British patented with ‘British & Other Patents Pending’ text. It hastwo crisp untorn window circles and the polylining incredibly fresh and clear. All edges are naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better, the merest faint trace of inner dulling on two with utmost scrutiny under bright light – it barely even registers even then. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces bordering on minuscule, few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This unusual ‘hybrid’ pressing plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault at all. That too on an acoustic sparse set. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early 1965 pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
