Description

BRIAN ENO "AMBIENT 1/MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS" Original 1978 U.S. edition of classic electronic LP. Featuring the custom inner sleeve with Brian Eno essay on Ambient Music dated September, 1978. PVC-7908 M-/M.

Brian Eno was a founding member of English Glam/Art Rock band Roxy Music. His synthesizer work created ethereal nuances & his outrageous stage attire almost overshadowed group leader Bryan Ferry. Leaving after just two albums, Eno embarked on a solo career not unlike that of fellow iconoclast David Bowie (with whom he would later collaborate). After three great Rock LPs & 2 LPs with fellow label-mate Robert Fripp, he tired of the limelight & ventured more into music landscapes & production work. He produced Roxy alter-ego band, the Talking Heads, the first Devo album & many others in the burgeoning New Wave field that he had helped to create. Eno then launched his Obscure Records label- a non-commercial venture that was a showcase for interesting but quirky artists that he found personally interesting. “Discreet Music” under his own name was released about that time. Some of Eno’s electronic music was now being used in motion picture scores so he compiled them onto “Music For Films” in 1975 which sold very well. Which now brings us to 1978. Eno had temporarily relocated to NYC & he started another new genre- Ambient Music. In his own words “Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.” Two albums were released, one was a collaboration with Harold Budd, the other was “Music For Airports”.  Installations involving tilted TVs showing city-scape videos while this music played in the background were shown at some of the world’s busiest airports offering a peaceful respite to the chaotic surroundings It’s a testament to his vision that. Eno’s music (with a little help from Robert Wyatt & Rhett Davies) still sounds fresh 44 years later.
