Description
Here's the bottom line: I bought a total of 6 of the highest quality, authentic second-state, mono butcher covers when I was at the "Big Show" (Austin, Texas). I paid top dollar. As mentioned below, I then contracted with Jim Hansen of Blue Jay Way Galleries to professionally peel them. When these are gone, locating a "real", professionally-peeled, 1966 butcher without any seam or spinesplitting - complete with the removed "slick", letter and frame - will be dificult to do. Here is the description of butcher #2. The Beatles 100% guaranteed-real "Yesterday And Today" Capitol T-2553 mono LP, absolute first-pressing from June of 1966. However - before the harmless trunk cover became the standard photo for this release - Capitol used this avant-garde Bob Whitaker photo taken on March 25, 1966 in Chelsea, London, England. This controversial cover depicts The Beatles in white butcher smocks surrounded by slabs of meat and decapitated baby dolls. This is the infamous "Butcher" cover...totally recalled just as it was about to be distributed (included in this auction is a copy of the recall letter from Capitol Records dated June 14, 1966). Capitol Records, in a clever cost-saving move, decided to paste a different slick (the "trunk cover") over the 'butcher cover" instead of throwing them all away. I've also included the removed "trunk cover" slick with this auction. The slick removal process was performed by Jim Hansen of Blue Jay Way Galleries in Los Angeles - one of only two recognized and qualified firms in the country who do this as a profession. The Excellent Plus cover in this auction is Spizer-cataloged as CAP 2553.MC1PL (commonly referred to as a third-state, or peeled cover). It is totally clean and presentable...and the "peel-job" came out super-detailed revealing the butcher photo! It has NO seamsplits, and the spine lettering is clearly legible (very rare with these). This cover is also still WHITE on all the edges (again, quite rare as a lot of these got 'tanned' and/or sun-faded, weathered, etc.). There are no writing marks anywhere, either (I did erase a small "name stamp" on the BACK of the cover that is inconsequential). This is a #6 pressing plant cover originally prepared in Los Angeles yet sent back to the Jacksonville, Illinois plant for the 1966 recovering process (Mr. Hansen can tell by the glue used and other "markers' - the Jacksonville paste-overs being a more difficult peeling process). Again, of note is the quality of this item...it is so difficult to find an example like this (no splits, stains, or writing...flat, straight, with bright white edges...a 100% perfect peel). I've included a brand-new, high-quality album frame that's never been opened (see photo)...I've also shown how this cover looks framed in a different photo. The record is in Excellent Plus condition with it's original mirror and sheen...with beautiful near-mint labels (super-hard to find in this condition, as well). It is absolutely the appropriate matching Los Angeles disc. This auction also includes the original Los Angeles "goldenrod orange" inner sleeve (straight and crisp with one clean minor seamsplit). The record is Spizer-cataloged as CAP 2553.MR1B. I have made every effort to provide the winner of this auction the 100% complete and totally correct "Butcher package" as it was experienced exactly 40 years ago. At the risk of typing too much, it should be noted that finding these without major seamsplits or other issues is next to impossible. Low reserve for this rare and complete keepsake.
