Description
The Beatles "Please Please Me" vinyl album 1963 rare - purchased in Liverpool very soon after first release. PMC 1202 Mono XEX.421, XEX.422
Parlaphone label printed Gold on Black (later main pressing Parlaphone labels were yellow on black) 'MT' Purchase Tax stamp either side of spindle hole on side 1.
Music credits to Dick James Music Co (not Northern Songs as was the case later). Owner's signature faintly visible (black on black) on labels if you look hard. with the light shining from just the right angle.
Side 1 Runout is stamped XEX 421-1N and stamped GO at 3 o'cllock, and a faint 2 at 9 o'clock. Side 2 Runout is stamped XEX 422-1N and stamped H at 3 o'clock, and a faint 1 at 9 o'clock.
Cover is the original one from when the album was bought but I believe it is the second print run. Front of the cover is in pretty good condition for its age but the back shows discolouration from old sellotape repairs and some signs of wear - unsurprising for something 57 years old.
Album has just been played for the first time in years and it performed extremely well for it's age - no jumps and no slips and not very many clicks. It was a fairly raw recording in the first place, and this fairly unprocessed nature of the sound comes through quite clearly.
Unsurprisingly there is a bit of background rumble and crackle audible between tracks but this soon disappears behind the music - you can just pick out a bit of crackle in a few places at high volume during the songs if you listen hard enough, particularly in quiet sections (of which there aren't many) and end-of-track fade-outs. Considering the age and usage of this record, the condition is excellent.
The only minor defects noted were: 1. A very slight clicks towards the end of side 1 track 3, Anna 2. Some fairly quiet clicks at the end of side 1 track 4, Chains, running across into the start of track 5, Boys, where it is lost behind the music pretty quickly. 3. A couple of very slight, barely noticeable clicks in the middle of side 2 track 1, Love Me Do. 4. A couple of slight clicks at the very end of side 2 track 3, Baby It's You.
