Description

THE BEATLES - 'SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND'

1969 UK 'ONE EMI BOX' MISPRESSING

**MONO LABELS BUT PLAYS IN STEREO**

This ultra-rare 1969 mispressing plays STEREO both sides but carries a 100% PMC 7027 mono label with correct 'XEX..' matrix reference in the 9 o'clock position. Only a very few copies made it to the shops and it is arguably the rarest UK 'Sgt Pepper' commercial pressing.

A variant of this mispressing also exists with the PMC 7027 catalogue number but with the 'YEX..' matrix reference on the labels (as illustrated in the new 'Record Collector - Rare Record Price Guide 2008'). However, these copies have a 'YEX 638-1 side 2 matrix. This copy has a 'YEX 638-2' matrix.

This extremely rare 1969 UK mispressing is on the UK 'One EMI Box' label: PMC 7027
Both labels omit the 'Sold in UK..' text but carry 'Gramophone Co Ltd...' rims
There is no tax/price code visible on either label.

Both sides play in *STEREO*

The cover is a fully laminated 'Garrod & Lofthouse' printed mono gatefold cover with internal 'flipbacks'.
Complete with original red & white EMI advertising inner-sleeve and cut-out sheet.

Matrix numbers: YEX 637-1 & YEX 638-2
Stamper numbers: 2,6/MMP & 3/OD

Labels: EXCELLENT MINUS

Visual: EXCELLENT MINUS

Both surfaces are clean & bright with just an occaisional light stylus hairline visible in strong daylight, but no major marks or scratches.
Close inspection directly under a halogen desk lamp reveals some wispy sleeve removal paper hairlines but no other significant wear.
100% flat on both sides without any dishing or warping.

Audio: EXCELLENT

Carefully but not overplayed, the sound quality throughout is clean & clear.
Careful listening at volume revealed just a few light ticks on the side 1 run-in and a single revolution pop at the end of 'Getting Better'.
However there is no other audible wear - even the easily damaged 'She's Leaving Home' play perfectly & without fault.
The final piano fades without noise or intereference and there are no jumps, skips or any other major fault anywhere.

Cover: EXCELLENT MINUS

A vibrant, unfaded front panel bearing just a few light spine wrinkles & small 'thumbnail' creases.
The lower corners show some minor shelfwear but all are clean & unbumped. The opening edges are clean & are without any tears or feathering.
The rear panel is clean and glossy with just a light graze towards the lower left corner, but no other significant wear.
The inside of the gatefold is 'as new' with no marks writing, missing laminate or paper.
The spine bears a touch of wear but all the text is readable & all seam are unstressed & unsplit.

Cut-out sheet: MINT
