Stereo Butchers are ten times rarer than the mono version--here is your chance to own the most infamous album in Rock history. Q:  Please define the following terms: "2nd State" and "3rd State". THANKS. Apr-24-08 A:  Sorry, I should have given definitions: "First State" refers to one of the very rare examples of "Butcher" cover LPs that were sent to radio stations and some retail outlets before Capitol Records recalled the album because it was considered detrimental to the image they were trying to market (first state mono and stereo Butchers have sold for tens of thousnds of dollars). Some 50,000 albums were recalled,and although they were supposed to be destroyed, captialism being what it is, there were LPs where the new "Yesterday and Today" trunk photo "slick" was just pasted over the Butcher to save costs. "2nd State" refers to these albums with the trunk slick pasted over and the Butcher picture underneath and haven't been tampered with. Since the Butcher photo was highly desired, many people tried to peel their trunk version. Most revealed nothing but others revealed their treasure--this is what as known as a "3rd state". The pasteover trunk cover has been removed to reveal the original Butcher cover. There is a wide variety of the quality of these "peels". Sometimes the glue was particularyl heavy and you have peels that are fair-to poor. A really good peel is highly valued--the more damage or wear, the less the value. Right now seems to be a good buying opportunity. I have seen mono Butchers in near mint condition sell for over $700 and stereo verions over $1500 (Reports vary, but stereoButchers are at least 10 times as rare as the mono version), however lately there have been a lot of good bargains to be had. In the long term these albums are great investments because of the limited supply, but I know for myself and many other Beatle collectors, just owning one of these icons in rock history easily surpasses the monetary value.
