Description

You are bidding on Billy Williams' well-known recording of "When Father Papered the Parlour" on 78 RPM disk on Columbia Records (A1691).  Recorded in England the previous year (the English didn't keep good documentation evidently), it is backed with "Where Does Daddy Go When He Goes Out?"   The disk is in excellent condition.

Richard Isaac Banks (March 3rd 1878 – March 13th 1915), who changed his name to Billy Williams after leaving his birthplace of Australia, was one of the most recorded popular entertainers of his and indeed of all time. His (over 500) recordings sold in their thousands long after his early death in 1915. Born in Melbourne, Williams tried a number of jobs before embarking on an entertainment career which led him to come to England in 1899. He became a popular entertainer in the music halls singing what were known as chorus-songs.

In the U.S., Columbia initially issued Williams’ records in the green-label “E” series, which normally was reserved for ethnic and foreign-language material. Later pressings of E1777 appeared with standard blue labels, and eventually “I’ve Found Kelly” proved so popular that Columbia recoupled it with Harry Champion’s “Little Bit of Cucumber” on a standard “A” series issue.
