Scarce lp documenting the great but little known collaboration between jazz pianist Bob James (in free jazz mode, years before his funk releases on CTI) and live electronic music pioneers Gordon Mumma and Robert Ashley. James' Trio consists of Barre Phillips on bass and Robert Pozar on percussion. Ashley and Mumma are responsible for the electronics and musique concrete backing up the Trio throughout the album, making this one of the first ever recorded combinations of jazz improv and electronics (amazingly predating AMM, MEV, Il Gruppo, etc.). The two experimental composers play their field recordings, synthesized tones, and strange radio and TV samples using variable speed tape decks, while James plays inside and around his piano, and Phillips and Pozar work to glue it all together. Composition credits are shared by Mumma, Ashley, James, and Phillips in varying combinations, but large portions seem improvised, and even the one track credited solely to Phillips has the constant presence of Mumma and/or Ashley's electronic effects (unfortunately the terse liner notes provide barely any details on the extent of Ashley and Mumma's contributions). This album includes a unique early version of Ashley's Wolfman, which would go on to become one of his first published compositions (though, oddly, here both Ashley and James are credited as composers of that track). Overall, a visionary and highly recommended lp.
Mumma worked with Merce Cunningham, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Marcel Duchamp, and Jasper Johns, and was a member of the Sonic Arts Union, a composers' collective that included David Behrman, Alvin Lucier and Robert Ashley. Ashley's composing explores experimental uses of language; he was also a member of the Sonic Arts Union. Barre Phillips has worked in free jazz ensembles with Bertram Turetzky, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, John Surman, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Joe Maneri, Peter Brotzmann, and John Coltrane. This album will be of interest to fans of John Zorn, Sun-Ra, Borbetomagus, Musica Elettronica Viva, Gruppe di Improvvisazione Nuovo Consonanza, Otomo Yoshihide, Frederic Rzewski, Alvin Curran, Richard Teitelbaum, Cornelius Cardew, Instant Composers Pool, Karlheinz Stockhausen, New Phonic Art, Michel Portal, John Cage, Negativland, FMP, Incus, Shandar...
