ALVIN BATISTE / THE SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY JAZZ ENSEMBLE – Centennial One (1980) SLM-1 – M-/EX (cover/vinyl) A totally amazing and tripped-out funky album by this Baton Rouge, Louisiana, historically-black college jazz ensemble. The group features loads of band members, and the album is produced and directed by jazz great Alvin Batiste of AFO Records fame. This is broken down into two sides - a "dance side" and a "listening side". It features some great funk and freaky electronic stuff too! Tracks are "Give It Up or Tell Where It's At," "Broken Dreamer," "ESP," "Clean Air," "My Little Star (Centennial Prayer)," "Jupiter Trek," "Bumps," and "Bat's Blues" on the dance side and "Music Came," "Rows," "Ghetto Hero," "Centennial Celebration," "Plutonic Trip," and "My Little Star Revisited" on the listening side. This is a monster local university recording and will blow your mind! Very rare! This is a beautiful copy. The cover is tight and crisp and in original shrink wrap. The vinyl is clean and glossy with only a few insignificant sleeve scuffs that don’t affect play. I grade this conservatively: M-/EX (cover/vinyl) This is an original pressing.
