Description
Charlee
Self-Titled / Éponyme
RCA Victor LSP-4809, 1971 original issue 1st pressing (Canada)
(hand-etched run-off matrix #'s: BPRS-1726)
Re-issued some four years later (with completely different cartoon-like cover art) on the much more common Mind Dust label (MDM-1001), this listing offers the genuinely rare original Canada-only first pressing on RCA, which features a cool simulated leather-textured front cover. Hard-to-find (in any condition), this one’s sharp, well-preserved and still in it’s original shrink wrap.
Montreal guitar wizard Walter Rossi had cut his teeth in the late 60’s recording with some pretty big names like Wilson Picket and The Buddy Miles Express (he also turned down offers from Three Dog Night and Janis Joplin). During those early years he also had the pleasure of jamming with Jimi Hendrix during his Band of Gypsies days.
* (see our other Walter Rossi listings)
Back in Canada, Rossi co-founded the progressive rock band Influence in 1969, touring and opening for both The Doors and Steppenwolf, and recording one obscure (and now highly coveted) album in 1970. The following year he formed heavy rock power-trio, Charlee.
Charlee’s only release, this superb self-titled gem from 1971 is nothing less than heavy rock at it's very best ! …..full of good pulsating hard rock and boasting lots of superb guitar work from the hands of Walter Rossi. .....Powerful, rocking and full of surprises, Rossi is one of the few to use Hendrix as a springboard for his own original ideas. Easily one of the best of its kind.
The instrumental opening cut, "Wizard", sets the tone ....and driving hard rockers like “Lord Knows I've Won”, the imaginative “Just You And Me” and “Wheel Of Fortune” keep things hot. “Let's Keep Silent” is notable for it’s fuzz guitar work while “A Way To Die” is a slower number, it still has Rossi's fine guitar chops at the forefront. All but one of the tracks were penned by Rossi.
Walter Rossi (guitar, vocals), Jack Geisinger (bass), Mike Driscoll (drums)
