Few debut albums can boast as consistently solid an effort as the self-titled Chicago Transit Authority.
In April of 1969, Chicago Transit Authority unleashed a formidable and ultimately American musical experience - a synthesis of electric guitar bluesy rock to more deeply rooted jazz influences and arrangements. This approach economised the finest of what the band had to offer -- actually two highly stylised units that coexisted with remarkable singularity.
On the one hand, listeners were presented with an incendiary rock & roll quartet of Terry Kath (lead guitar/vocals), Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals), Peter Cetera (bass/vocals), and Danny Seraphine (drums). They were augmented by the equally aggressive power brass trio that included Lee Loughnane (trumpet/vocals), James Pankow (trombone), and Parazaider (woodwind/vocals).
This fusion of rock with jazz would also yield some memorable pop sides and enthusiasts' favourites as well. Most notably, a quarter of the material on the double album -- "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?," "Beginnings," "Questions 67 and 68," and the only cover on the project, Steve Winwood's "I'm a Man"
The tight, infectious, and decidedly pop arrangements contrast with the pile-driving blues-based rock of "Introduction" and "South California Purples" as well as the 15-plus minute extemporaneous free for all "Liberation."
Even farther left of centre are the experimental, avant-garde "Free Form Guitar" and the politically intoned and emotive "Prologue, August 29, 1968" and "Someday (August 29, 1968)."

Track Listing:
Side 1: Introduction (6:35) / Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? (4:33) / Beginnings (7:58)
Side 2: Questions 67 and 68 (5:04) / Listen (3:22) / Poem 58 (8:37)
Side 3: Free Form Guitar (6:53) / South California Purples (6:10) / I'm A Man (7:40)
Side 4: Prologue, August 29, 1968 (0:57) - Someday (August 29, 1968) (4:13) / Liberation (15:41)

LABELS: The labels are clean, fresh and unmarked with barely a spindle trace to be seen - beautiful copy, hardly been played - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: All four vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen. Under a bright light there are some superficial marks on the surfaces - nothing major and nothing of any audio consequence - EXCELLENT+
VINYL Audio: Outstanding audio throughout - crystal clean, clean, sharp and vibrant - fantastic LP. Nothing like their later radio friendly AOR sound - the music here is heavy, brassy and punchy on Record One with Record Two having more experimental touches - for instance 'Free Form Guitar' is based solely on feedback and is a stunning tour-de-force and the 15 minute+ 'Liberation' would sit quite happily on Zappa's Hot Rats with it wah-wah guitar - it's that good. On playback at a loud volume there are no scratches, no sticks/jumps, only a handful of light 'ticks' detected on Side One in one quiet section (very minor and nothing I found at all intrusive) and no surface noise (the run-ins and track divisions are practically silent). This is a beautiful copy which has seen little use and plays to just about the highest possible standard, sounds sensational and is critically graded NEAR MINT for audio - fantastic copy
SLEEVE: The original 1st press matt gatefold cover is clean and unmarked but there is some rubbing to the edges and spine (this is a notoriously difficult sleeve to find in decent condition due to its mostly black, untreated nature and this is actually one of the better ones I've seen). There is some rubbing to both the front and back surfaces but none of the common very heavy ring wear and the inside is clean, fresh and unmarked. Overall, a very well preserved example - Nr EXCELLENT
