Odeon International Talking Machine Co. 104079c / 104084 (10.75")
For titles and artist credits please see scans.
Vocal with a plucked string instrument. Sanxian ??? Ruan ? ?
Condition: E- (light constant, even hiss), old handwriting on one label and
ownership sticker on the other one.
There is a 'separation groove' visible on both sides, which was only used
between 1908 and 1910 (to prevent production of pirated copies). The recordings
were probably made in connection with the German concession in Tienstsin/Ti?nj?n.
PLEASE READ:
This disc comes from the estate of Prof. Heinitz, Hamburg, Germany, and has
his ownership sticker on one of the labels.
The 'Phonetic Laboratory at the Seminar for Colonial Languages' in Hamburg
was opened in 1910 under Prof. Panconcelli-Calzia.
The studies were focused on African and Asian languages. As from 1920,
Wilhelm Heinitz (1883-1962) lectured there on ethnomusicology. He worked
there from 1915 until 1949 and specialized in comparative musicology,
primitive music (especially from Congo and Sudan), and drum languages.
Heinitz is the creator of 'discology', the science of the history of discs as media
for cultural developments and phenomena.
In 1929, the Berlin based Carl Lindström AG published a heavy luxury book for
its shareholders, '25 Years Lindström Company'. Heinitz was instrumental in
setting its focus on the global recording and sales activities of Odeon, Parlophone,
Beka, Fonotipia and other labels.
The archives of the 'Phonetisches Institut' with Heinitz's files and recordings have
been moved from Hamburg to the University Dresden in 2006.
