Chuck Berry's first post-prison album, and his first real album of 1960s material, not only picks up where his 1950s career left off, but is better than some of the LPs that he was generating when his career was interrupted. In addition to four then-recently charting singles -- led by "Little Marie," (his sequel to "Memphis"), these included "Promised Land," "No Particular Place to Go," and "You Never Can Tell," all configured musically as classic Berry rockers with direct yet highly sophisticated lyrics. It was all like the old days, with a top studio band (including Johnnie Johnson on piano for some tracks) in place, and even bassist Willie Dixon (making a last stand on upright bass) present. The new songs were interspersed with some perfectly chosen vintage songs, among them "Our Rendezvous," "Night Beat," (the latter a slow, bluesy instrumental that had first seen the light of day in 1958), and the classic "Merry Christmas Baby." It was all an auspicious comeback, selling well enough to keep audiences taking Berry seriously and, coupled with then-recent hits (including the extraordinary "Nadine"), helped keep Berry a hot enough property going into the mid-'60s that Mercury Records ended up successfully bidding for his services.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.
(b) The record comes in a poly-lined stock inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 3:1.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners
- A small water stain affects the area about 4 square inch wide in one corner (practically invisible; the cover has to be viewed under certain angle to see it)
- Cover has a slight warp along the opening slot; this has absolutely no effect on the record.
- The cover has a short, 2-inch long razor-like line (cut) on the cover, as if someone attempted to cut away the shrink wrap with a razor, but inadvertently left the mark on the cover as well. The paper slick is intact and no part is missing, but the razor line is visible.
- Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel
- Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
- Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (nothing significant)
- Cover has some fraying/wear along the top and bottom seams
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams (yet)
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No writing
- No peel-off marks
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
