Description
BENNY GOODMAN, as many of you already know, was a child prodigy, a stunning virtuoso of the clarinet, and disciple of hot jazz by age thirteen. He joined Ben Pollack's band at sixteen, and made his first records with Pollack at seventeen. Still an obscure sideman at nineteen, he made this amazing record in 1928.
"CLARINETITIS," besides showing the Goodman articulate virtuosity, displays his considerable talent as a composer - something I wish he'd more fully explored later on! The other side, "THAT'S A-PLENTY," of course, is the famous old Dixieland standard, but played in a heated, modern, take-no-prisoners style. Along with the other side, this record will leave you breathless at Benny's fantastic talent. None of this was any guarantee that he would take the world by storm in 1935, sparking the entire Swing Era. But it was a good start! MEL STITZEL (piano) and BOB CONSELMAN (drums) more than help out, forming a lovely hot trio. I wish the later Goodman trio, with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa, had done more stuff like THIS!
This original "White Box" Vocalion 15705 is in gratifyingly clean E condition. Plays like a dream!

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!
