Description

COLOSSEUM "Valentyne Suite" 1969 UK 1st VERTIGO SWIRL A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT, SWIRL INNER, EXCELLENT AUDIO
COLOSSEUM
Valentyne Suite

ORIGINAL UK VERTIGO (VO 1) FIRST PRESSING (November 1969) OF COLOSSEUM'S TREMENDOUS SECOND LP, "Valentyne Suite" - THEIR FIRST ON VERTIGO AND THE VERY FIRST RELEASE ON THE LABEL
THIS COPY HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN FREQUENTLY ENJOYED OVER THE YEARS BUT IT STILL SOUNDS SUPERB AND DELIVERS A GREAT SOUND - CRYSTAL CLEAR, CLEAN, SHARP AND BRIGHT WITH FANTASTIC BRASS AND HAMMOND ORGAN - GREAT STUFF

PRESSED ON QUALITY HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL (very chunky for Vertigo) WHICH DELIVERS A TREMENDOUS POWERFUL SOUND WITH AN IMPRESSIVE LOUD CUT
THE RECORD HAS THE FIRST VERTIGO LABELS WITH A SWIRL TAKING UP THE WHOLE OF SIDE A AND A LARGE SWIRL ABOVE, AND "VERTIGO" BELOW THE CENTRE HOLE ON SIDE B - AS THE EARLIEST UK PRESSING THE TEXT "A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT" IS PRINTED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE LABEL
MATRIX: 886775 1Y*1 420 1 1 1 4 / 886775 2*Y*1 420 1 1 1 4
AND IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT GATEFOLD SLEEVE - THIS FIRST ISSUE SLEEVE CARRIES THE INTERNAL TEXT "COPYRIGHT SUBSISTS ON ALL VERTIGO RECORDINGS...." (which was later changed to "...ALL STEREO RECORDINGS...")

The second album from this British jazz-rock quintet rocks harder than their first outing.
Their take on Jack Bruce's "Rope Ladder to the Moon" is especially strong, and "Jumping off the Sun" has a similar feel.
"Bolero" has been done to death, but guitarist Dave Clempson (who later replaced Peter Frampton in Humble Pie) uses it to launch a showcase of guitar fireworks.
In fact, Clempson's blazing guitar licks shine throughout. Dick Heckstall-Smith once again impresses on his arsenal of saxophones and woodwinds, and the side-long title cut which he co-wrote with drummer Jon Hiseman is a highlight of this disc.

Track Listing:
Side 1: The Kettle / Elegy / Butty's Blues / The Machine Demands A Sacrifice
Side 2: The Valentyne Suite

LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with quite heavy spindle wear - this copy has been well played
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen. There are some marks on the surfaces but none of these are of any major audio consequence (please see audio assessment below) - it still sounds great - visually VG+
VINYL Audio: Fantastic LP - heavy jazz-rock-blues with sensational musicianship, delivered with a crystal clear, warm, rich and detailed sound. On playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always a great pleasure to return to this one) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, just a few light ticks (but nothing I found either major or intrusive) and barely any surface noise (just a light touch on the run-ins). This copy still sounds very, very impressive indeed and plays with superb clarity, no discernible groove-wear and no distortion and is very strictly graded EXCELLENT for audio - as even though it's obviously been frequently enjoyed over the years it still delivers great sound. Overall, a very nice playing copy indeed of this much sought after original 1969 pressing
SLEEVE: The original matt, untreated gatefold is also in EXCELLENT condition with just some general storage wear to the surfaces, edges and spine but all spine text is still clear and bold. The whole sleeve is clean and unmarked with no structural damage (no rips, tears or label removal marks) and is a very fine example
the original Vertigo inner sleeve is in VERY GOOD++ with just some creasing
