And here's a really wonderful original WAR DEPARTMENT RADIO PROGRAM TRANSCRIPTION DISC containing a complete 30-minute episode of the armed forces radio series: "COMMAND PERFORMANCE".
This program aired on June 9, 1946 and featured announcer KEN CARPENTER and singer GLORIA DeHAVEN as host, with the usual great lineup of guest stars:
- SIDNEY GREENSTREET, the great Warner Brothers character actor best remembered for his roles in The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca, and on radio as The Fat Man;
- ISH KABIBBLE, the comic from Kay Kyser's band, here presenting poetry of his own composition;
- JIM BACKUS, the future MISTER MAGOO and appearing here as Hubert Updike, the original incarnation of his Thurston Howell III character;
- BILLIE BURKE, best remembered as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz;
- MIKLOS ROZSA, famous composer who won Academy Awards for his film scores to Spellbound, A Double Life and Ben-Hur;
- DR. SAMUEL HOFFMAN, inventor of the electronic musical instrument, the THEREMIN - which was immortalized in films like The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Lost Weekend, The Thing From Another World and of course Spellbound.
It's a terrific show, with every song and sketch hitting the mark. The highlight of the program is an orchestral performance of the theme music from Spellbound, conducted by Rozsa and featuring Dr. Hoffman of the theremin. It's an outstanding performance.
This is an original 16" WAR DEPARTMENT disc, issued to AFRS radio stations and it's in a protective sleeve.
The disc is clean and uncracked; the recording is in very good condition.
See scans of the labels for both sides of the disc. There are no skips and no scratches.
