Description

Nearly 18 months prior to the cd release in the U.S., the Blue Rose label in Germany released the 2nd cd by the Continental Drifters, “Vermilion”, in May of 1998.  Already a major fan of the Drifters, i ordered the cd immediately, and found on the Blue Rose website that they also had released a vinyl pressing of “Vermilion”.  Well, I couldn’t resist that, and ordered one along with the cd.   When it arrived, as soon as I pulled it from the inner sleeve, I was displeased with the initial condition of the pressing; a lot of imperfection pressing marks, and some scuffs.  And when I played it, sure enough there was a good amount of surface noise, the occasional pop or click, but at least, there were no skips.  I did email Blue Rose’s website and explained the substandard pressing I had received, and they in turn explained that the vinyl pressing was extremely limited, and that I could return it to Germany for a refund, but there were no copies left in stock to exchange for.  For all that hassle with no replacement, since there were no skips, I figured I might as well just keep it, since not that many contemporary bands were being pressed on vinyl back in 1998 (compared to nowadays, that is).   This whole back story is merely to point out the shortcomings of how the record plays.  No skips, but does not play like a new record should.  So, be advised in advance; don’t buy this for “sound quality” on playback.  I have graded the record as “very good minus”, and the cover as near mint minus.  There are a couple of small slight creasings toward the top of the rear cover.  There is also a one-sided lyric sheet insert which is near mint; see the scan of the blank back-side of this, there are some slight ink remnants (?) in the center, as originally received.   A couple of years later, when I saw the Drifters in concert for the third (and final) time, at the Narrows Center For the Arts in Fall River, MA, when they were touring for the newly released “Better Day” (their 3rd cd release, just before they broke up), the band were all kind enough to sign the back cover photo on the lp jacket.  As you can see in the photo, they did a wonderful job!   So, if you’re a fan of this band, here’s your chance to acquire a quite rare vinyl pressing of “Vermilion”, but perhaps most importantly, a beautiful photo of the group with perfectly placed signatures suitable for framing.   Contact me with any questions, thanks for looking!
