Uptown 202. Cool Papa Smith (AKA Dr. Hepcat; AKA Lavada Durst.) "You Better Change Your Ways Woman!" b/w "Christmas Blues."
This extremely scarce blues 78 was recorded in Austin TX c. 1949. Albert Lavada (“Dr. Hepcat”) Durst (piano and vocals) was also the first black disc jockey in Texas (and possibly, in the US.) He made three 78s in 1949 -- two on Uptown and one on Peacock -- under three different names: "Dr. Hepcat," "Cool Papa Smith" and "Lavada Durst." The Uptowns are the scarcest. Later, he published a book on “hep talk” with a glossary of terms, called The Jives of Dr. Hepcat
This 78 is in M- condition -- I am hesitant to call anything 'mint,' but this one appears to have never been played. Looks like old store stock. Shiny as a mirror. Labels are also perfect. Uptown Records was a tiny operation owned by KVET program director Fred Caldwell. The instrumentation on these sides is somewhat different than what is stated in Blues Records – there is a guitar present (and no bass.)
