The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is a 1972 concept album by rock icon David Bowie, which is loosely based on a story of a rock star named Ziggy Stardust. The album peaked at number 5 in the U.K. and number 75 in the U.S. on the Billboard Music Charts.
Ziggy is the human manifestation of an alien being who attempts to present humanity with a message of hope in the last five years of its existence. Ziggy Stardust, the definitive rock star, is ultimately destroyed by his own excesses of drugs, sex, and by the fans he inspired.
The sessions for Ziggy Stardust began only a few weeks after Hunky Dory was released. The first song from the album, "It Ain't Easy", was recorded September 1971.
This 40th Anniversary Edition contains the album on 180g vinyl along with a DVD (audio only) featuring the 2012 stereo mix and the 2003 5.1 mix. Four previously unreleased bonus tracks are found on the Audio Only DVD.
