Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A vintage jazz classic that appears very lightly played.

Cat Number: EXA 86.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Very Rare: yes without doubt one of the rarest 7 inch records I have ever had. This would have sold in minuscule numbers and how many will ever survive in this very impressive, lightly played condition? Jazz EPs are beyond elusive and like this and extremely rare. Both record and cover are lovely, all described further down.

Brief Info: I do not offer jazz often, but when I do, I hope it’s something a wee bit special. A very rare 1959 UK jazz EP in a superb fully laminated flipbacked cover. Recorded in October 1958 by Bert Steffens. It features music for a movie thriller and the cover states “the best jazz ever heard in a British film”. Hayes’ tenor acts as a shadow to the trumpet as they play the fast blues and the cars disappear into the night (on ‘Escape and the Chase’). The band members above feature on all four tracks. Few records this great age will be in good enough condition to play on a hugely revealing Linn LP12, but this sounds very impressive and plays with little unwanted. I am not saying pristine perfect, but it will take an extraordinary copy to better it significantly (if indeed you will ever find one). Pure vintage contemporary jazz at it’s very best. Records from this era were often played with heavy thick steel needles that even make Dansette mono stylus look subtle. Even a single play could gouge into the grooves and ruin the sound. I am certain this copy has avoided such abuse and has been well looked after. This reitterated by a quite stunning cover which is laminate protected both sides and will prove beyond difficult to find like this again. A massively collectable record for the jazz connoisseur and featuring both Reece and the saxophone legend Tubby Hayes.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this put into context of a 1959 cover which has natural age darkening on the white back. A single format with FULL laminate on both sides. The back has two external top and bottom flipbacks. Printed and made in England by West Brothers Printers Limited, Mitcham.

Lamination – Front & Back: An extraordinary cover which has been beautifully preserved, to be perfectly honest, my grading of EX++ is being very conservative and I can hardly imagine finding one of these a great deal better. It is made with very thin, flimsy card and has survived into SEVEN decades in the most beautiful of condition. The front is stunning: with laminate near perfect and it retains the most incredible shine and freshnesss and has NO peeling or flaking. No only that, there is hardly a crease to be seen – one minute ultra fine half moon seen (just) only under angled light and almost nit-picking to even mention. Amazing colour which is vivid and intense. Any traces of friction rubs or dulling to the slick and super-smooth surface are equally faint and light with any pressing of the rim or label area very minor indeed. A front little short of archive quality.

The back in terms of wear is practically the same again. But over 53 years or so, white will naturally darken a little – like old newsprint or book pages. So this has moderate and consistent darkening of the card which simply gives it the most beautiful aged look. Many collectors of older material actually want things to look a little aged, it gives that more authentic look and feel of the item. Again the laminate is virtually total with just one tiny surface chip on the centre of the upper flipback end. Superb shine and clarity with hardly any dulling or creasing again. Both flipbacks are solid, incredibly neat with no scuffing, burring or significant grubbiness to their ends. Put as simply as possible: this cover is beautiful.

Top Edge: Dead straight, fully laminated and ultra smooth to the fingertip. Not even a chip to the very end of the tips that have a tiny white.

Bottom Edge: Almost as above, a fraction less straight but still incredible.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring tiny and faint. This is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: The spine is practically the same as the top edge. No text on these of course. Find all four edges this straight, clean and crisp is little short miraculous.

Corners: Tiny tip rubs – and I do mean TINY. All retain excellent or better shape and hardly a tip crease to be seen. Just the slightest rounding on the bottom right, this being almost too critical for a cover like this.

Cover Summary: An amazing EP cover and it has to be one of the rarest and best condition almost antique sleeves I have ever seen or had. Bear in mind just how fragile these things are and how many will ever be found as such. NO tears, NO writing, NO real laminate issues worthy of special mention. Just natural darkening of the white areas that barely any sleeve this age will avoid. A very strong all-round example of a much-prized item – this will delight most-all jazz connoisseurs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): again, this is being ultra critical. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint. There are NO penetrating scratches on this record, hence it plays with NO pops or clicks. You can simply imagine what records of this era will usually look and sound like. Audio equipment of the late 50s and through best part of the 60s was basic and downforce on pickups massive. Steel needles or (at best) heavy thick mono stylus that ground into the delicate grooves rendering them noisy with that beautiful detail stripped and lost. This copy looks very lightly played and has avoided such harsh treatment. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality rare jazz EP plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong detailed sound and practically free of any distortion or clipping, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very impressive sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Brass and reed instruments have complex sound and harder to track, this has no issues with the sound nigh-on fully focused and precise. Simply enjoyable and this being played on a very revealing LP12 front end and Naim amp. Most records from this era will simply fall apart with noise, distortion, crackle and clipping, but there is so little unwanted here. Even clean modern 45 rpm records seldom play ‘silent’, so what would you realistically expect from a 1959 original? Well you may be surprised. Few copies will match or outperform this impressive record, of that I am certain. It will rarely be seen or offered and unless clinical perfection is demanded, this will thrill most-all jazz collectors and connoisseurs. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – a genuine experience to hear real music from this bygone era. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my strongest recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
