Description
An original 1st press of 'M.I.J.' from Dec 1972 on the UK Purple label. Matrix 1/1/1/1. Etching 'Porkie/Peckie/DELTA etc'. Please note the labels are consistent with 1st press and still show 'Gramophone' in the perimeter text. This copy is also interesting because it is actually a contract pressing from when Emi were struggling to keep up with demand at 1st release. You will note that the labels exhibit a circular depression - this is only found on the contract pressing. In addition, instead of having stamper characters on both sides of the label you only find a "3" at the 9 o'clock position. What I can vouch for, having sold many 1st pressings, is that the contract copies are every bit the equal of the EMI copies..and, maybe, even better? The heavy-set vinyl comes housed in an original gatefold cover printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. Also included are both original generic white inner sleeves.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex+) In superb condition and have only seen light use. Under close inspection there are only a couple of light marks per side, and one semi-feelable mark on side 1 - which does sound so see details below please. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT+ level of playback with two deviations. One of the greatest live albums for audio quality and mastered by 'THE MAN' Mr. Peckham - what's not to like! And believe me the audio laid down here has to be heard to be believed - absolutely knock-out from start to finish. Intros and inbetweens are pretty much all silent and the audio comes across with perfect clarity. Interference is very minor and infrequent. All we detected were a couple of crackles in a couple of isolated moments per side. There are just two issues across the four sides that we need to make you aware of. Firstly, the openings seconds of side 1..where they're essentially warming up ready to kick in with "Highway Star". I'm getting a bit of crackle in the organ tinkering before the crowd starts roaring their approval. As the drums strike and the song actually starts..it plays clean from there on in. The second deviation is during the quite intro section of 'Child In Time'. There's a mark, as mentioned above, so expect a few clicks and the odd crackle in this section. It's not loud or up front - but will be audible due to this being a very low-key section. A shame because without this mark the record is nigh on perfect. BUT it is what it is...There's still Four Sides 98% of great audio from one of the greatest live acts of the seventies.
Cover (Ex) In great shape and has clearly been looked after down the years. The front looks great without any heavy creasing - just one slight scratch and one thumbnail crease. The rear looks great too with just a couple of indentations showing. The interior is pretty much immaculate. Edge wear is light and the openings sharpish. The spine is 100% intact. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity.
Inners (Ex-) Lightest ageing and no splits.
