To put it simply, this is a great record. Donovan was definitely into jazz at this point because so many of these songs have those influences. “The Observation” is the first instance of this. It’s pretty weird. The percussion plays a big role, but is perfectly completed by the piano. “Bleak City Woman” is a mellow, jazzy tune. The horns are very nice and I like the barely audible piano plunking. The guitar is nice, as well. I’d comment on Donovan’s voice, but I’d rather just let it be known that he sounds amazing on every track.
