The John Paul Jones produced title track provides the album with its one slice of pop psychedelia and needs no introduction from us. Thereafter, Donovan settles into a more introspective mood especially on the acoustic "Writer in the Sun" and "Sand and Foam". A clutch of songs featuring great musicians fill the middle part of the album. This was an interesting point in Donovan's career. Meanwhile, producer Cameron contributes his most flamboyant arrangement on "Hampstead Incident", arguable the meatiest track on the album.This album is the essence of sixties swinging London cool:  hip, jazzy, folky, cool, groovy melodies, psychedelic, smart, arty and full of come-ons. The title track everyone knows, but 'Sand and Foam' is the best Donovan song not considered a greatest hit, and maybe the best anyway.  It is some of Donovan's best poetry.  The cruel refrain (for Donovan's divorce of his first wife?) of "Girl Ain't Nothing but a willow tree...weep for me" from the song 'House of Jansch' (named for the great guitarist Bert Jansch) is followed up immediately by the irresitible seduction song "young Girl Blues".  Donovan is letting you know he is at the top of his powers here, taking it away and giving it back at once.

Almost certainly Donovan's most listenable Lp. Put it this way: you put yer coin into the fruit machine, and this time it comes up all yummies. "Mellow Yellow", "House Of Jansch", "Epistle To Dippy", "The Museum", "Writer In The Sun", the surprisingly tough "Sand And Foam" ... really, there's not a bad track on the album. As creative and endearing as the rest of the 1966 pack of of swingin' London grooves....

CONDITION: The cover is MINT in original factory shrink wrapper...clean all over, stiff and solid ...no bends, no writing and no split seams...a GREAT upgrade or first time score...

The vinyl is all shiny clean and glossy both sides M- with clean Epic labels...upper levels copy from 43 years ago....
