Here we have lovely soprano Emma Albani on a very nice and clean 10” red G&T G.C. 3540.

The selection is Robin Adair (trad) and was recorded in London in January 1904. (Thank You Robert Johannesson)

Ms Albani (Marie-Louise-Cécile-Emma Lajeunesse) was Canadian, and played the harp, piano and church organ. She performed for Tsar Alexander II and Queen Victoria. In fact, she was a friend of the Queen, and sang at her funeral.

Here she is singing a Scottish styled song (one that Adelina Patti also had a bash at).

The record plays very well and is very clean. It shines like a sergeant-major’s boots and is as clean as a well-sucked Polo mint. It has no grit-in-the-sleeve-marks, only a very few very very light sleeve and handling marks, which don’t matter a hill o’ beans. It has the satin sheen of many records of this date.

Using the VJM grading system (which we find to be vague and imprecise.. but heigh ho, everybody uses it) we reckon that this record is a VERY Very Strong E- or perhaps an E.
